iFixit Offers Assistance to Resolve Hardware Problems for Pixel Fold Owners
Those who take the risk of purchasing Google’s Pixel Fold and encounter any hardware problems can attempt to resolve the issue independently. iFixit will provide official tools, parts, and self-repair manuals for the foldable device, as per Google’s announcement.
Since last year, those willing to attempt to fix issues with other Pixel devices at home have been able to get the parts and information they need from iFixit. Google told 9to5 Google that the program includes a new foldable.
You can still mail in your Pixel Fold for repair or take it to a store when the foldable product’s warranty is no longer valid (or if you accidentally damage it). However, if you find a repair that suits you, you can buy several parts from iFixit. They include charging ports, batteries, adhesives, and yes, a 7.6-inch foldable indoor display. You can also get step-by-step guides from iFixit.
Foldables are notoriously fragile and delicate, even compared to the most typical smartphones. Perhaps that’s why, as 9to5 Google points out, no other major manufacturer has an official foldable self-repair program. While Samsung also offers parts and guides for other devices through iFixit, you’ll need to let a technician handle your Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip repair — unless you really know what you’re doing and know how to use off-the-shelf components.
We have yet to see iFixit’s teardown of the Pixel Fold to give us an idea of how difficult it can be to repair the device. While we had positive impressions of the Pixel Fold in our review, it’s too early to tell how well Google’s first foldable will hold up over time. Either way, you’ll at least have an extra repair option if things go pear-shaped.
